Ashley Williams’ AW17 collection is you leaving the party at 5am

18 Feb 2017

The Ashley Williams catwalk was dotted with junk from a community garden: a swing set, a slide, a chest of office drawers, a discarded mattress, some traffic cones. All with unruly foliage growing out and around them, a few solemn-looking models were sat amongst the debris, camouflaging into the scene. Birds chirped a chipper tune as the anticipation was set for the show to begin. Models weaved around the urban paradise with rhinestone barrettes exclaiming “PARANOIA” above their ears.

Williams’ AW17 collection drew inspiration from far and wide, from the cowboy hats and fringing of the Wild West to bonnie Scotland’s tartan prints. There were tracksuits perfect for crawling straight into bed after a night out, and sunglasses perfect for a trip to Tesco Express the next day, juxtaposed with smart loafers, tailored trousers and wool kitten heels. Bold florals, extreme, voluminous ruffles and shades of sunshine yellow mixed with cropped puffas and sweatshirts exclaiming “MISERY” were sending mixed messages. But one statement printed across their chests was clear as day: “SAVE THE PLANET” emblazoned across the chest of eco-warrior Glacier Girl.
