Five on it: from Tierra Whack to BTS, your weekly music round-up

12 Apr 2019

Did we spend the whole week just deeply embroiled in Lil Nas X memes and not a lot else? Maybe. Regardless, here is some other music magic that landed this week.

Roxanne Tataei ft. Shabaka Hutchings – ‘Perfect Fit’

This track from Roxanne’s magic second album, Full Moon In Aries, was already cosmic in 2018, but the video gives it some extra wow. Serving 80s sci-fi aesthetics with brashly coloured furs and starry backdrops, this is every bit as opulent and excellent as the song itself.

Tierra Whack – ‘Unemployed’

No Tierra Whack song feels truly complete until it’s got an accompanying visual, and as ever, one of our favourite MCs doesn’t disappoint. Chopping up some very scared-looking potatoes, to serve to a giant, Jabba The Hutt-esque spud, it’s weird as hell and we love it.

Anderson .Paak – Ventura

Suffice it to say, if you’ve got 3 Stacks himself saying “constant great shit man” in your album teaser, we are on board. After Oxnard landed we were a little disappointed, but Ventura goes back to the lush soul-jazz-R&B sounds Anderson does best – plus Smokey Robinson and Brandy are on it, so what is not to love? BTS ft. Halsey – ‘Boy With Luv’

Beautiful painted backdrops, beautiful outfits and beautiful, fun grooves underpinning harmonies and meticulous flows, BTS are back and asserting just why everyone is talking about them. My friend who is a K-pop expert tells me it comes ahead of a project about “stopping to strive for perfection and accepting the beauty of imperfection as part of the process”.

beabadoobee – ‘If You Want To’

This rising Gen-Z star makes sweet and sparkly lo-fi pop (think Sixpence None The Richer), and her latest video is colourful, creative and strange. The Manila-born, London-raised artist’s EP dropped at the end of last year, and we’re excited to hear more.
