For their second season in a row Starsica’s AW18 show of unadulterated fun and fancy presents an eccentric wardrobe that also feels entirely wearable.
The collection covers a lot of ground, with beautiful gathered tulle tops and dresses in pastel lilac and sea green, embroidered sweats and shaggy furs. The looks are tied together by the brand’s playful approach which is embraced by the models, sashaying down the catwalk and interacting with the audience.
There is a tension between death and angels made visible through the coffin inspired handbags that are hang from the models wrists. Carved wings emerge from the back of a suit and one stand out look comprises of a bodice made from gold-sprayed feathers.
Starsica’s strength, however, lay in the suiting and more tailored dresses, reflecting founder-designer Ike Seungik Lee’s training in sculpture at the University of Seoul. Traditional British herringbone, tartans and Prince of Wales checks are updated with embroidered symbols inspired by Greek mythology. The tailoring is further updated with inventive pattern cutting. In one item Starsica’s mix-and-match aesthetic is encompassed with the front half of a duster coat combined with a back half of a bomber.
