We are looking for a knowledgeable and well-organised chief sub editor to join our team.
This is an important role, developing gal-dem’s style guide, supporting gal-dem’s editorial and ensuring that copy across the is grammatically and factually correct and written in a gal-dem tone of voice.
We are looking for someone who has a clear knowledge of culture, arts and politics and shares gal-dem’s mission. They should understand the lived experiences of women and non-binary people of colour and have an instinct for strong headlines, standfirsts, captions and proof reading.
Applicants must be able to work at speed and should have at least two years of relevant experience working within the journalism industry, have a good understanding of media law and should be comfortable taking a subbing test. They must be comfortable working with Google Docs and InDesign.
- Writing, editing and proofreading text
- Making sure that gal-dem’s style is adhered to
- Writing headlines, picture captions and story summaries
- Editing reports, press releases and social media copy
- Liaising with gal-dem’s journalists, reporters and editors
- Verifying information and story details
- Ensuring that stories are the right length and correctly placed on pages
- Sizing photographs and placing them within features
- Making sure that stories are accurate and do not compromise legality

Freelance 12 days in 2020 (starting in Feb). Salary: dependent upon experience.
We are looking for an experienced development producer to join our small, fast-paced work environment. As a development producer, you will be responsible for progressing projects through from original ideas through to commission at a range of broadcasters, partners and platforms on behalf of gal-dem’s production arm. This will involve juggling a variety of projects at different stages of development. You must have an in depth understanding of the varying perspectives of women and non-binary people of colour.
You will come up with new ideas for development showing an awareness of the TV market in the UK and internationally and social media platforms including brands like Snapchat with an understanding of appropriate projects for gal-dem and must have the skills to develop returnable formats. You will need to be constantly on the lookout for fresh, new, gal-dem appropriate talent and be comfortable to proactively establish relationships with commissioners, broadcasters and any relevant parties.
Experience in casting, producing, self-shooting and editing taster tapes is highly desirable. You must have a minimum of three years working within film and television, applicants without this will not be considered.

Level Junior Full-time
Salary – £22,000
gal-dem are a new, award-winning media company committed to sharing the perspectives of women and non-binary people of colour. We produce daily content on our website and social media channels, an annual print edition, and work with brands to fund incredible journalism and creative projects across the UK.
We are looking for a Commercial assistant to join our team to support the work that we do in Brand campaigns, memberships, and merchandising. This is a junior role suited to those coming from or looking for Account Executive level positions in agencies, marketing assistant roles in brands, or administrative and membership roles at member-led organisations.
You will be working in a small, fast-paced environment with a commercial team of 4 other staff. gal-dem’s commercial output lives in traditional media formats such as print, sponsored content, and display, but also in more non-traditional formats such as consultation projects, events, memberships, and merchandise. Successful applicants will be expected to assist the Partnerships Manager, CEO, and Head of Partnerships across all of these, to maintain the smooth running of projects and proposals.
Day to day, you will be expected to assist in the formatting of campaign plans, proposal documents, and reporting on digital campaigns, as well as leading on membership and merchandise queries. You will also be expected to draft press releases for both commercial and editorial projects.
The role is best suited to someone interested in working across a wide range of advertising disciplines, and gaining experience in community management as well as the day to day admin of maintaining live advertising campaigns.
